The Positive Impact of the Columbian Exchange on Society Today

The Columbian exchange was a dramatically widespread exchange of the animals, plants, culture, and ideas between the Eastern and Western hemispheres (Old World and New World). It was one of the most significant events in human history because it really brought nations together in the ways of trade which eventually lead to power. Christopher Columbus' first voyage to the Americas in 1492 launched the era of large-scale contact between the Old and the New Worlds that resulted in this economical and cultural revolution. The contact between the two areas circulated a wide variety of new crops and livestock which supported increases in population in both hemispheres. All of these events had a positive impact on the society we have today.
Our society revolves around the world of trading and depends on other imports and exports from various places from around the world. Starting in 1492 when Columbus sailed to the Americas, he had discovered items never before seen by the European cultures. He had then brought them back to Europe and started selling them for profit. During this stage, the citizens gathered that these magnificent items were from the new world. From then on, more and more explorations were casting off to settle and engender new, vast plantations. These plantations went on to produce many of the exports from the South Americas today.
In the beginning of the early plantations, the Americas originally had their own plantations even before Columbus sailed to the Americas. Europeans took part in expanding the plantations and made it possible to produce different types of food, all thanks to them bringing different types of seed. Over time, the Europeans brought over slaves to help with the plantations. Along with bringing the slaves over, the white men also brought over with them, foods such as, cocoa, apples, coffee, fruits and vegetables. It’s hard to imagine life without common fruits and vegetables like oranges and bananas, and meats like beef and chicken. Soon, people in the Americas were able to farm these products as well.
Europeans also brought over domesticated animals to use as pets and transportation. Horses, brought over from Asia, really affected and changed the lives of the Native Americans by giving them the way of traveling long distances in a shorter, less laborious task. This became their mode of transportation for hundreds of years, and is even used today by some.
As news was spread around Europe, more and more adventurers/explorers went on to prosper off the land and make wealth. These explorers used maps to get to their destination. Using maps, they got to their destination and started settling there. Population started increasing by the boatload. This was a great event because the more people there are in an area, the more of a community there is. News spread onto different parts of Europe. Along with movement, new wealth from the Americas was coupled with a dramatic growth in overseas trade. This was the granddaddy of the trading for today because it revolutionized ways to trade and communicate.
We now have a more advanced society thanks to Christopher Columbus and all of his accomplishments in the exchange of cultures. Because of him, we have the export and import business of today. World cuisines improved with the trading of new and different foods. Commerce grew with the creation of more businesses and jobs. The spread of cultures led us to understand how other people lived and how their society works. So, you can thank Christopher Columbus for these positive contributions to the society we have today.
