what is the Colombian Exchange?
The Columbian Exchange is the widespread exchange of animal, plants, diseases, culture and ideas between the eastern and western hemispheres (old world and new world). The Colombian Echange was one the most significant events concerning agriculture and culture in all human history.
What was the impact of the Colombian Exchange?
The new world has just been discovered by the old world. Plantations on the land were very big and required time and hard labor. They had been taken over by the Europeans and the Native Americans there were put to work on their own land. Many Native Americans refused to work so they starved themselves.
The work that needed to be done on the plantations wasn’t getting done. Europeans then forced African slaves to work on their plantations. The Native Americans were not going to let the Europeans push them around. They weren’t going to work on their own land for free for the European profit.
Finding the new world was a great accomplishment for the Europeans but not so much for the natives that lived there. They had brought many diseases along with them to the new world that the indiginous natives
had no immunity to.
Many diseases such as the common cold resulted in death. This had a extreme impact on society, it killed many people and brought hardships the new world citizens. The resources we have today to cure diseases weren’t available to them during that time. So they had no way of getting rid of it. Any sickness or injury resulted in death and there wasn’t anything to do about it.
The African slaves brought over to the new world were unfamiliar with the area therefore they didn’t have the resources the natives did to resist work.
The discovery in the new world benefit the old world and brought hardships to everyone else. This took away freedom from Africans and killed many with the diseases brought over from the old world. Many benefits such as the Colombian Exchange were a result in the discovery of the new world.
