The Columbian Exchange: One of the Greatest Events to Benefit the Old World.
By Ryan Howard 2/11/11

Throughout history, the old world has seen positives and negatives from the rise of the Roman Empire to the dark ages. One of the greatest positives to the old world was the Columbian exchange.

The Columbian exchange brought many new food products to the old world, like potatoes and cacao beans. This has created a surplus of food, feeding many Europeans and leading to population growth.

This population acceleration and increase in the availability of food has decreased the demand for European farmers. Many Europeans that aren’t required to farm are now receiving education. Now not only are many Europeans living who would be dead without the Columbian exchange, but they’re being educated and will use their knowledge to further improve society.

This exchange has also led to many people gaining great wealth from the products they’ve acquired in the new world, but many have died trying. Some might say the deaths at sea of those who attempted to grow rich aren’t worth the benefits of the Columbian exchange. However, the lives saved with the food brought back and the wealth gained from selling goods from the new world far outweighs the risk of death at sea.

The Columbian exchange, which has brought a myriad of new products to the old world, caused population growth and led to education and wealth is certainly one of the best events to happen to the old world.
