What was the impact of the Columbian Exchange on society? (Perspective of a citizen in New World in 15th and 16th centuries)
Many changes are going on in our village. There are strange people invading and new animals and foods are being brought over. It’s being called the Columbian Exchange.
My brother was out for a walk the other day and met a young boy. He was very dark and did not speak English very well. He gave my brother this new food called an apple. It’s a sweet little round thing that could change how I see foods from now on. He told my brother there is more and that he could get us all sorts of exotic foods.
It seems to me that these foreigners never knew we existed.
Everything they are bringing to us has been good so far. The only thing that is concerning to my village is what seems to be a virus going around. It is spreading very quickly and already people are starting to die! Mama says to stay away from anyone who has a cough but my brother is starting to cough too. I think we’re going to have to move because the more new people that come to our village, the more natives that get sick.
Some of the stronger men are using force to make us do tasks for them. These tasks are very manual and require a great deal of discipline because many natives are resisting. This is another reason why we’re going to have to move soon. There are other people that are being forced to do this work who look a lot like the boy my brother met. They told me these people are making us into slaves. I don’t know what a slave is but I am guessing it is not a good thing.
I’m not sure whether or not I like this “Columbian Exchange.” Although it’s bringing us new foods and animals, it’s also bringing us deadly diseases and making us do back breaking labor.
